Retrópica (National Dance Award | Funarte, Brazil) is a work of cultural anthropophagy. It devours samba, bossa nova, and flamenco and reinvents itself in a dance that breaks with the idea that a culture is hermetically sealed.
While neocolonialism, fanaticism, intolerance, and immorality trample us, Retrópica – woman, hunger, fire, and extreme pleasure in the form of pure honey that flows through the veins of the equator – comes into being.
This is a dance piece performed by the Brazilian dancer and choreographer Mari Paula, in which, through a woman’s body, the creative tension and friction between two cultures are explore
